Wearing Optune in public
MARIA (DEVICE SUPPORT SPECIALIST):
My name is Maria and I am a Device Support Specialist here at Novocure. I usually get concerns about how the patient will be perceived when they go outside, and I just tell them that they are helping themselves when they are on treatment.
Adjusting to the device itself was rather quick, I want to say within a month, I was adjusted to all of the, Optune array changes. The thing that probably took more time for me was adjusting to the social aspect of it of when you walk outside and wearing the device and getting used to people not making the eye contact that a normal person would give or more on the forehead contact because they’re looking at my arrays.
Optune, a lot of times people don’t even notice it, with, with my hair and my wig. But I have Optune on right now, and you can see the cables right there. So what I do is, especially if I have a collar on, it just goes right down my back, and then I hook the connector box to my belt loop or my pocket and people don’t even notice it.
Because of the way Lynn wears the Optune, people don’t even know she’s wearing anything because it’s on her back and she’s wearing the hats that match her clothes. It’s just normal. I mean, if you treat it like it’s normal, then the people around you also think it’s normal and no one acts funny around it.
In public it’d be like, there was a concern. I didn’t want to go to the store, but people didn’t care.
People didn’t care. So that was one of your reasons for even thinking about whether you wanted to start –
— because it would’ve drawn attention to yourself. But as you say, but you went out like, two times before you realized that everybody’s got something in life.
And nobody really cares about the equipment –
— that you were wearing.
I have had a few people come up to me and ask about Optune, like what it is, why am I wearing it, that kind of stuff. And I really enjoy talking about it, so that quick question sometimes turns into a 10 or 15 minute conversation, as you know, I, I love Optune, I love the technology, I like talking about it. I just explain that it’s a brain cancer treatment, and how it works.
Little kids are going to say little kid things about it or stare, and you’re going to get the moms that say, hey, don’t look at that guy. And, you’re definitely going to have to start teaching people or being an ambassador, literally.
I think we were in New Orleans –
— and some kid said, are you attached to the matrix?
